Combined Heat and Power

Idea submitted by: Phi Nguyen - Mechanical Engineering Technology

The college should install CHP or cogeneration as an integrated energy system where the heat byproduct from the production of electricity is harnessed and used in other building services. CHP's reduce electricity cost, lower the cost of generating heat and economically make sense with a typical payback per as low as 5 years depending on building conditions.

Implementing a CHP system will reduce Mohawk College's energy usage, and therefore environmental impact. CHP's are increasingly being used in all types of buildings around Ontario, and the addition of one to Mohawk College would allow a unique teaching opportunity to the Engineering Technology students.
